People
often mistake “Gore-Tex” as merely a type of fabric,
but it is more than that – it is a registered trademark of
W.L. Gore & Associates. Just as many people call all tissues
“Kleenex” and all bandages “Band-aids,”
many people call all waterproof fabrics “Gore-Tex.”
Gore-Tex happens to be the most widely recognized name when it comes
to waterproof and breathable fabric. Therefore Gore-Tex outerwear
is great outerwear – it keeps the wearer both dry and comfortable.
What is Gore-Tex? Gore-Tex material is made of a thin and very
porous fluoropolymer membrane which has been bonded to some fabric
(nylon or polyester). This membrane has about 9 billion pores per
square inch. This lets the Gore-Tex material allow water vapor through
while staying impenetrable to liquid water.
Because Gore-Tex material is so great and waterproof and breathable,
it is often used in outdoor clothing. Most outdoor enthusiast have
at least one piece of Gore-Tex outerwear, or certainly something
similar. Gore-Tex outerwear is great for people who are skiing,
snowmobiling, climbing, playing in the rain, snowboarding, biking,
and doing other sports, as well.
Gore-Tex outwear keeps the wearer dry in wet weather; but just
as importantly, it is breathable – this means that it will
not feel like saran wrap on the wearer. When the wearer sweats,
some of that water vapor will be able to pass through the pores.
Pretty much any piece of outwear that you want can come in Gore-Tex.
There are Gore-Tex pants and Gore-Tex jackets. There are even some
hats and gloves that have Gore-Tex. When you are stepping out into
the elements, it is a good idea to wear Gore-Tex outerwear.
