Snowmobile
equipment… HELMET
Besides the snowmobile itself, a helmet is the most important piece
of snowmobile equipment. In fact, if you are renting a snowmobile,
most places include the helmet in the price or throw it in for free.
What to look for in a snowmobile helmet:
· Decide if you want a full face helmet (with a face shield)
or one that you will wear with goggles.
· Adjustment capabilities so that it can adapt to all faces
· Enhanced peripheral vision
· A back light (not necessary, but a great safety idea if
riding at night or in low light conditions)
· A washable interior
· A comfortable fit (with a comfortable, quick-release chin
strap
· A moisture management liner
· Ventilation ducts
· Visor
These are just a few features of many possibilities I recommend
you at least consider when buying a snowmobile helmet.
Snowmobile equipment… OTHER SNOWMOBILE SAFETY EQUIPMENT
· A white headlamp (at least one) with a candlepower of
high intensity (to illuminate at least 500 feet ahead during hours
of darkness)
· A red tail lamp (at least one)… it must be visible
from 500 feet away at night
· Reflective material. It is a good idea to have reflective
material not just on each side of the cowling, but also on your
snowmobiling apparel and saddle bags
· A good brake system
· Sound suppression equipment
Snowmobile equipment… APPAREL
All Snowmobile apparel that you have should be completely waterproof
and windproof.
· Snowmobile boots – If your feet are not happy, then
the rest of you will not be happy, either. Choose very warm boots
with adjustable straps for added comfort and also to make them easy
to get on and off.
· Snowmobile bibs – Your snowmobile bibs should have
a padded seat and knees. They should also either be very easy to
take on and off (even with your jacket on), or have a drop seat.
Choose snowmobile bibs with easily adjustable straps, pockets, and
reflective piping.
· Snowmobile Jacket – A snowmobile jacket with a zip-out
liner is more versatile. Choose a snowmobile jacket with reflective
piping, hand-warmer pockets, a pocket for a radio or cell phone,
and comfortable cuffs.
Snowmobile equipment… FOR YOUR SNOWMOBILE
· Windshield – when you are going at top speeds without
a windshield or with a damaged one, the cold can feel damaging.
A windshield can also protect you from flying debris.
· Snowmobile bags – whether you only need a handlebar
bag to hold a map and a snack, or whether you need full-on touring
bags, snowmobile bags are very useful pieces of snowmobile equipment.
You can keep in your snowmobile bags a change of warm clothing,
your first aid kit, food, and anything else you need. It can also
be fun to take a multi-day trip and pack your snowmobile bags full
of all of your supplies. Choose snowmobile bags that are easy to
add and remove to your snowmobile so that you do not have to deal
with them on short rides when you do not need them.
· Warming hand grips – alright, so handlebars that
keep your hands warm are not necessarily necessary pieces of snowmobile
equipment, but they can sure make a ride out on your sled that much
more enjoyable! Enough said.
