Headlines
in October’s issue of Trail Rider’s read:
"Liability insurance jumps by more than 50%" There is a liability insurance issue currently having quite a negative
affect on snowmobile enthusiasts. Increasing premiums stem from
the all to common fear of liability lawsuits.
Fingers are pointed at those quick to sue after accidents rather
than taking personal responsibility for their actions. Though sometimes
it is the design of the snowmobile that is to blame, sometimes it
is the fault of the rider. However, without limits on insurance
premiums, the fear is that participation in the sport will become
nearly impossible to afford.
The increase in liability insurance has made quite an impact on
snowmobilers. The OFSC's insurance has risen by 1.2 million and
they are not alone. Many organizations are also suffering from high
insurance rates if they can get any insurance at all. There are
fewer and fewer insurers who will accept trail liability accounts.
The insurance trouble is affecting other fees. Predictions for next
years permit price are being declared dependent on the price of
insurance premiums.
To make things worse, power limits and age restrictions have been
added to the insurance agreements. Tickets, accidents and previous
claims will all be factors included in the increase of insurance
premiums and deductibles.
I can tell you about the problem—but I can’t give you
an answer. This is a very complicated time for snowmobile owners,
companies, and the insurance providers involved.
