Snowmobile ReviewsPolaris, Ski-doo, Yamaha and Arctic Cat, the four major snowmobile manufacturers have new sleds with innovative new features. With an EPA mandate that calls for a thirty percent reduction in carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon levels in exhaust, the goal has been to replace the traditional two-stroke engine in most snowmobiles to a cleaner, four-stroke engine. The new four-stroke engine snowmobiles are smoother and quieter as well as more fuel-efficient than their two-stroke predecessors.

In February 2005, Yamaha announced the 2006 line up of a four-stroke performance snowmobile, featuring eleven new models.

The original RX-1 has been replaced with a new line-up of lightweight yamaha snowmobiles. The APEX family uses a new lightweight, fuel injected, 150hp, four-cylinder. The Yamaha Mono-Shock suspension now comes in multiple variations and models with one using an exclusive, push button, Ohlins shock absorber for accurate calibration in any riding condition.

Chris Reid, the Senior Production Manager for Yamaha Motor Canada, says, “Our new four-strokes now have the feel and response of the very best two stroke bump and trail machines but with the added benefits of less fuel consumption, maintenance and inconvenience. Two strokes still require expensive oil to lubricate the engine and unlike a clean running four-stroke, expel it out the exhaust pipe in a cloud of smelly blue smoke. The cost and odour used to be worth the price of performance but with our new technology, not only is it not necessary, it really doesn't make any sense. Our research shows that over 70% of the snowmobilers out there are now becoming aware of the four-stroke advantages and will consider a four-stroke for their next new sled purchase."

Peter Smallman-Tew, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, adds, "I believe 2006 will be remembered as the beginning of the end for the two-stroke snowmobile. We are very excited about our new four-stroke line and are confident that our customers will be extremely happy when they experience the profound improvements brought to market by these new snowmobiles."
