Winter
boots are a very important accessory for having warm winter fun.
Let me start out by informing you that I do not have winter boots.
I always think to myself, “Why should I go out and buy such
an expensive pair of boots that are completely seasonal?”
Yes, I have other seasonal shoes – my flip flops, for instance.
I am most definitely only going to expose my toes to the air in
a pair of flip flops during just the warm summer months. But I can
buy a pair of flip flops for under ten dollars. So, I go out and
buy myself a new pair of flip flops at the start of every summer
season.
There is no way that I could afford to do such a thing with winter
boots – good ones can be quite pricey. But I have to remind
myself – I would not need to go out and buy a fancy pair of
winter boots at the beginning of every winter season. My feet are
no longer growing. My boots from this year are still going to fit
next year, and the next year. If I go out and buy a really good
pair of winter boots, they are most definitely going to hold up
for many years to come.
“But,” I still think to myself, “do I really
need a pair of winter boots? Is it really necessary that I have
a pair?” Sure, my feet get cold when I am out shoveling the
walk, but I know that I can warm them up the second I step back
into my warm house.
Sure, I go out and play in the snow during the winter, and I have
for years; but I have not yet lost a single toe to frostbite or
hypothermia! Well, I do remember having some pretty cold feet, though.
I do remember glancing over at my friends’ nice warm winter
boots and feeling a bit jealous. I do remember going back to the
car early because my feet just could not handle being so cold and
wet.
Once, I tried to wear my frog rubber rain boots while up in the
canyon sledding. This had seemed like a good idea. The boots are
rain proof, shouldn’t they be snow proof as well? It turns
out they are not. Sure, my feet stayed dry; or, rather, they would
have – if only they would have stayed inside the boots. But
man alive! Were my feet ever frozen by the time we got to the bottom
of the hill. If only I had been wearing winter boots. I probably
would have been able to go for another run.
So, this year, after another time of sledding and after realizing
that my hiking shoes do not double as winter boots, I have decided
that I should buy myself some winter boots. This is not the same
as saying I have already bought some winter boots, but I do at least
have my eye out for a great pair. And with any luck, by next winter,
my feet will be nice and toasty in their very own pair of winter
boots.
