Did
you know that there was skiing in the Middle ages? Would it surprise
you to know that before there were steal bladed ice skates, they
were made of bone?
Here’s a bit of trivia on history of skiing:
· The first hints to the existence of skis are on 4500 to
5000 year old rock drawings at Rodoy in Norway.
· There are remains of skis in bogs, with the oldest ski
found in Hoting, Sweden which is about 4500 years old.
· Before skis were used for fun and leisure, the ski was
used for work and transportation.
· The oldest version is a wide, short ski found in Sweden
that has been shown to be over 4500 years old.
· Cave and rock drawings suggest that skis were used even
predating the ones found in Sweden.
· The first skis may have been used by a hunter/traveler
· Early skis were not made for speed, but designed to keep
a traveler on top of the snow as they went about their business
Ancient winter sports in Literary history:
Literary reference to skiing can be found in Virgil’s Aeneid,
written almost 2000 years ago, and Swedish history also makes reference
to skiing in its history archives. In 1521 the Danes overran Swedish
and massacred all but one Swedish noble, Gustav Vasa, who was able
to escape. The episode is recorded and describes two peasants setting
out to find Gustav on skis.
Bone Ice Skates:
Before the iron age, bones were tied to the bottom of shoes using
leather thongs. Weird, huh?
