BURNS HARBOR -- Good thing for careless snowmobilers in town that
the weather has turned warm.
If you snowmobile or ride an off-road vehicle in the wrong place
from now on in Burns Harbor, it could cost you $2,500. Do it again
and it could cost you three times that amount.
The Town Council on Wednesday approved an ordinance making it illegal
to operate a snowmobile or ORV on town rights-of-way and on private
property adjacent to and within 10 feet of a town right-of-way.
The vote was unanimous, with member James McGee absent.
The move was made to protect residents' health, safety and welfare,
according to the ordinance.
Concern was raised by damage done to town culverts and drainage
systems by snowmobiles, council member Louis Bain said. An enforcement
mechanism was needed, he said, because police had talked to offenders
to no avail.
Use of the vehicles on other areas of private property with the
owner's permission is still permitted.
