A local man has died following a snowmobile accident during the
February Nor'easter this weekend. The crash happened on Pulaski
Boulevard in Bellingham, just over the state line from Woonsocket.
Police say 42-year-old David Masse was an experienced snowmobiler
who headed out just as Sunday's snowstorm was winding down.
Bellingham Police say David Masse dropped off a friend just before
5:00 Sunday afternoon when he crossed Pulaski Boulevard and crashed
into a tree. Officers found Masse unconscious at the scene. They
tried to perform CPR, then rushed him to Woonsocket Landmark Hospital,
where Masse passed away.
There was still a light snow falling at the time of the accident,
say police, but it was nowhere near the blizzard-like conditions
that covered the area earlier in the day. The road had already been
plowed down to pavement. Snowmobiles tend to lose traction when
they run on bare ground.
His family says David was always a responsible rider. Massachusetts
Environmental Police are looking at the snowmobile to determine
if there were any defects.
Services for David Masse will be held Wednesday night at Cartier's
Funeral Home in Bellingham.
